To get a proper advice for fertilization, it is important to know your starting point. This can be done by analyzing the mineral nitrogen concentration. The available nitrogen can be absorbed by the plant in the form of nitrate or ammonium. The sum of the total amount of nitrate and ammonium is known as the mineral nitrogen.

By measuring the total amount of nitrogen before the sowing, the precise amount can be added. Also during the season measuring can de done to see, if the right amount is still in the soil, or that fertilizing is required. Depending on the crop the amount of N-mineral can be measured in the top 20,30,60 or 100 cm of the soil.
